Set in Singapore, Ilo Ilo chronicles the relationship between the Lim family and their newly arrived maid Teresa (Angeli Bayani). Like many other Filipino women, she has come to this city in search of a better life. Her presence in the family worsens their already strained relationship. Jiale (Koh Jia Ler), the young and troublesome son, starts to form a unique bond with Teresa, who soon becomes an unspoken part of the family.
But this is 1997 and the Asian Financial Crisis is starting to be felt in the region.

Anthony Chen’s feature film debut “Ilo Ilo” became the first film from Singapore to win in the world’s most prestigious festival. After earning a 15-minute standing ovation during its gala premiere, it was awarded the Camera d’Or, given to the best first feature film presented in the Official Selection, International Critics’ Week or the Directors’ Fortnight section where it was an entry.
